It is a measure of her achievement that, over decades, these masterful poems continue to speak with undiminished accuracy.","OtherText_Accolades_0_Auth":"Anne Michaels","OtherText_Accolades_1":"Twenty-five years after its initial publication, Power Politics remains a path-breaking lyric utterance on sexual politics and human survival, unflinching in its emotional honesty. The reappearance of this work is an occasion to be celebrated.","OtherText_Accolades_1_Src":"Carolyn Forché","OtherText_Accolades_2":"The pleasure of reading these poems today is not only in realizing the longevity of their power — the sting is still there — but in experiencing them anew in the light of the poetry and fiction written in the twenty-five years since.","OtherText_Accolades_2_Auth":"Linda Hutcheon","OtherText_Accolades_3":"Astonishing, notorious, a classic — Power Politics, twenty-five years after its first publication, still negotiates with awesome presence of mind the definitions of heterosexual eros: hook and eye; fact and weapon; truth and brutality. Atwood’s terse, unsparing, and often comically incisive lines are a guided tour of the knotted Laingian underworld of a love affair. The poems are inspired and fluent. Read them and shiver.","OtherText_Accolades_3_Auth":"Sharon Thesen","OtherText_Accolades_4":"Brilliant precisionist and angry lover, Margaret Atwood performs an autopsy on a love affair that’s dead but won’t lie down. I feel again the thrill and shock I experienced on first reading these ruthless and moving poems. Power Politics changed the definition of the love poem, the long poem, and, I believe, the course of Canadian poetry. It cuts like a laser beam. It goes beyond sexual politics into the dark heart of a tottering global village.","OtherText_Accolades_4_Auth":"Phyllis Webb","OtherText_Back_cover_copy_0":"
ATWOOD IS HOTTER THAN EVER:

The hugely acclaimed Handmaid’s Tale television series swept the 2017 Emmy Awards, advancing a discourse on women’s rights and body politics that is becoming rather disturbingly timely given the current political climate in the U.S., and indeed, North America. From delicate handprints on a cave wall to goddesses in ancient Mesopotamia; from political tyranny that came in the guise of a message from God to the convoluted journey to emancipation — the story of women is the longest revolution in history. So many times change was in the wind. So many times the finish line blurred. And so many times hope soared. Still, from Toronto to Timbuktu, the promise of equality has eluded half the world’s population. Now there’s a power shift. There’s never been a better time in human history to be a woman. And despite the blowback from misguided politicians, leftover chauvinists, and hypermasculine misogynists, women are closer to gaining equality than ever before. The journey ahead is bound to be epic, and it will affect everything — our wallets, our jobs, our very future.

Why now? How come the power shift didn’t happen during the first wave of the women’s movement (1848–1920), when the suffragettes struggled to get the vote? Or the second wave (1963–80), when women “put all our faith in the pill” and attended consciousness-raising sessions that discussed the oppression of women and demanded change in the status of women? Or even the third wave (1992–2010), which began after the American lawyer and academic Anita Hill was called to testify at the televised confirmation hearing of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, whom she had accused of sexual harassment, thus challenging his fitness for the position? Hill was then excoriated by the all-male Judiciary Committee, who didn’t believe her, and Thomas was appointed to the Supreme Court. The fallout became a watershed moment in American politics and a turning point in raising awareness of sexual harassment. But still the long-term status of women was mostly unchanged.

Now with the fourth wave, a movement that began in 2012 when social media took off, there’s a focus on intersectionality, a push for greater empowerment of traditionally marginalized groups — Indigenous people, people of colour; LGBTQ; ethnic, religious, and cultural minorities; people with physical and developmental disabilities; people of differing social classes — and for greater representation in politics and business. Fourth-wave feminists argue that society will be more equitable if policies and practices incorporate the perspectives of all people. While earlier feminists fought to shake off the ties that bound them to subservience, this new wave calls for justice against discrimination, assault, harassment, and it calls for equal pay and individual choices over our own bodies. Words like “cisgender,” “non-binary,” and “polyamorous” reflect the new vocabulary of a changing, more diverse society, and the clarion call for inclusion is being heard around the world.

This wave created hashtag feminism and put abusive powerful men on notice. And by all accounts, this one got liftoff. The symbiotic relationship between social media and individualism is likely driving the bus for change. The internet is all about “instant.” Twitter and Facebook can elevate people and create extreme celebrity and propel movements. Some of these, like #MeToo and #TimesUp, have been amplified by attention from influential entities such as the New York Times and the Hollywood film industry, but others have been simmering over the last decade. As a journalist, I have watched human rights and the rights of women and girls become the focus of conversation, whether in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo or the savannah in Kenya, in the deserts of Afghanistan or the college campuses in North America.

We have always depended on political will to change up the agenda — the stroke of the politician’s pen to install the stop sign or build the shelter or legislate a new law. It often took public will — marches and petitions — to push the politician to make change happen. But in the last few years, I’m seeing what I call personal will as the driving force behind both public and political will. Malala Yousafzai is a good example. She was fifteen years old, living in the Swat Valley in Pakistan; she wanted to go to school to learn to think for herself. But the Taliban, who claim they act in the name of God, forbade education for girls. She defied the cowardly thugs by speaking out publicly on girls’ rights to an education. On October 8, 2012, she climbed onto the school bus. The last words she heard were: “Which one is Malala?” The Taliban gunman shot that child in the head for going to school. But Malala recovered, and then she started a movement. Today everyone knows her. She’s become the world’s daughter, not because a politician in the Swat Valley insisted that the girls go to school; not because there were marches and petitions demanding education for girls. It was personal will that propelled Malala.

The other telling side to this episode is that atrocities like this happen every day. But this time the world grabbed on to the story and didn’t let it go. I believe it was more evidence of liftoff, of the changing status of women; proof that people realize that dismissing half the world’s population is dangerous and expensive and wrong.

The holy grail for the social innovators of the twenty-first century is knowing how campaigns such as #MeToo and the rise in personal power can be sustained. Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms, authors of New Power, think they know the formula. They call it the difference between old power and new power. “Old power works like a currency,” they say. “It is held by few. Once gained it is jealously guarded, and the powerful have a substantial store of it to spend. It is closed, inaccessible, and leader-driven. It downloads, and it captures.”

As for new power, as exemplified by the #MeToo movement, it operates “like a current. It is made by many. It is open, participatory, and peer-driven. It uploads, and it distributes. Like water or electricity, it’s most forceful when it surges. The goal with new power is not to hoard it but to channel it.” Their conclusion is that #MeToo gave a sense of power to the participants, and that each individual story was strengthened by the surge of the much larger current.

Today that empowerment is taking on everything from date rape to old lingering mores that cling to the lives of women the way barnacles attach to ships, slowing them down, denying their fair passage. It is also fuelling change — enormous, life-altering change.
","OtherText_Review_0":"This is a far-reaching account of the plight of women and girls throughout history and across continents, often told via the moving personal stories of survivors who have endured sexism’s many atrocities . . . Discretion is a skill they have fallen out with but they don’t know that yet. They still fancy themselves stealth, piling four parka-plied humans into a single toilet stall, scarves dangling beneath the door, telling tails on them all.

Volume control is a thing of delusion in the confined spaces they inhabit. It will be years before this is fully realized by those who escape the scene or are thrown into adulthood by overdose or pregnancy. These lucky few will feel overwhelmingly, retroactively embarrassed by their one-time rock star fantasies. Olive can hear them bawling about their supposed betrayals as clouds of tobacco smoke and slurry syllables updraft skyward through the slightly parted window.

But Olive forgives them their make-believe follies.

They are no better or worse than most of the half well-off, half grown-up humans she has met. She has chased the white dragon into smoky rooms where grad students complained about unkindly thesis feedback while wearing thousand dollar watches. A holiday-tanned winter wrist, a baggie held aloft, another Volvo fob serving key bumps round the ring. Under such circumstances, Olive is for the most part silent. She can pass for one of them until she releases language into the world.

Olive often holds her rural tongue for fear of being found out. She is not a card-carrying member of the townie majority. And rarely are there other fugitive faces for Olive to hide behind on nights when she wants to get on the go. But Olive can’t sacrifice a tissue on mere mucus this morning. Her store of napkins is running low and the last time she tried to hock and spit the wind gust blew snot back onto her sleeve. The line of mucus running from her lips to her elbow turned her weak stomach over. A middle-aged woman in a bright blue Canada Goose coat muttered oh for the love of god as she hurried past the translucent boundary. They are not twenty-five. They are not even thirty-five and feel as such. Most internally promise to stay home with the kids next weekend as they turn their faces to or from the sunshine depending on the quantity of painkillers ingested in the car. In other words, this is not your traditional Newfoundland novel of social isolation. Instead, Megan Gail Coles portrays the harsh existence of the islanders as emblematic of the human condition itself. The characters’ lives unfold around a fine restaurant. They are physically and emotionally crippled by their society’s devastating inequalities, the women psychologically maimed by repeated sexual assault. Coles’s narrator storms against the status quo in a kinetic novel that dazzles, challenges, and exhilarates.","OtherText_Review_4_Src":"Scotiabank Giller Prize Jury Citation","OtherText_Review_5":"Beautifully fluid writing pulls the reader right in and keeps them gliding along. A man’s last day on Earth replays in the minds of others in a furiously sensual, heartrending fugue. Something for Everyone is Moore at the peak of her prowess — she seems bent on nothing less than rewiring the circuitry of the short story itself.

["Adult Award Winning","Adult LGBTQ+","Adult Short Stories","Adult Starred Reviews","Astoria","Book Club Pick","By (author) Moore Lisa","Feminist Reads","pub date: 2018-09-04
"option1":"trade paperback","option2":null,"option3":null
["trade paperback
"option1":"epub","option2":null,"option3":null
["epub
"option1":"mobi","option2":null,"option3":null
["mobi
"option1":"Digital Audio, MP3","option2":null,"option3":null
["Digital Audio, MP3
"option1":"Lossless Format Audio, WAV","option2":null,"option3":null
["Lossless Format Audio, WAV
["//houseofanansi.com/cdn/shop/products/BNCImageAPI_702fd5f9-08c1-451f-b723-708b751e692e.jpg?v=1654445151
//houseofanansi.com/cdn/shop/products/BNCImageAPI_702fd5f9-08c1-451f-b723-708b751e692e.jpg?v=1654445151
Title
//houseofanansi.com/cdn/shop/products/BNCImageAPI_702fd5f9-08c1-451f-b723-708b751e692e.jpg?v=1654445151
//houseofanansi.com/cdn/shop/products/BNCImageAPI_702fd5f9-08c1-451f-b723-708b751e692e.jpg?v=1654445151

Winner, Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award
Winner, Alistair MacLeod Prize for Short Fiction
Longlisted, Scotiabank Giller Prize

“Lisa Moore’s work is passionate, gritty, lucid, and beautiful. In a series of unconventional tales that explode off the page, Moore ushers her reader into a familiar but fractured and anything-but-straightforward reality. Lisa Moore writes of quotidian lives in crisis. Her characters’ anxieties mirror our own: family, love, employment, finances. But from these commonplace lives she conjures spellbinding mini-dramas, drawing us in from each story’s opening line, generating great suspense and fully engaging our sympathies. Throughout, the writing is vibrant, uninhibited and packed with sensual detail. Moore acknowledges the beauty of nature and the human capacity for kindness; she is no stranger to the essential comedy of the human condition. But never does she shy away from the dark undercurrents of her characters’ lives. Something for Everyone is an important book by a major talent working at the height of her considerable powers, an author who isn’t afraid to stretch the boundaries of her art and who pursues her singular aesthetic vision in an uncompromising and wildly entertaining manner.","OtherText_Review_4_Auth":"Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award Jury Citation","OtherText_ShortDescription_0":"Lisa Moore returns with her third story collection that shows us the timeless, the tragic, and the miraculous hidden in our everyday lives.","PrizeCodeText_0":"Winner","PrizeCodeText_1":"Winner","PrizeCodeText_2":"Long-listed","PrizeCodeText_3":"Commended","PrizeCodeText_4":"Commended","PrizeCode_0":"01","PrizeCode_1":"01","PrizeCode_2":"05","PrizeCode_3":"03","PrizeCode_4":"03","PrizeName_0":"Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award","PrizeName_1":"Alistair MacLeod Prize for Short Fiction","PrizeName_2":"Scotiabank Giller Prize","PrizeName_3":"A Globe and Mail Book of the Year","PrizeName_4":"A Quill & Quire Book of the Year","PrizeYear_0":"2018","PrizeYear_1":"2018","PrizeYear_2":"2018","PrizeYear_3":"2018","PrizeYear_4":"2018
Lisa Moore returns with her third story collection that shows us the timeless, the tragic, and the miraculous hidden in our everyday lives.
5.25
in"}
