Anansi: Do you read one book at a time or do you always have a few on the go?
Ben: I've come to know myself as capable of reading only one work of fiction at a time. Occasionally I can read theory, memoir, political stuff at the same time as fiction. But when it comes to stories, or a novel, I need to live in one space, one book, at a time.
Anansi: Do you tend to stick to one kind of book (literary fiction, memoir, etc.) or do you like to switch it up?
Ben: I mostly read literary fiction, as far as genres go. I used to read more story collections but am increasingly reading novels.
Anansi: Do you have a favourite Anansi author or book?
Ben: My favourite Anansi book of all time is probably Lisa Moore's Open, which ought to be considered one of the best story collections in the more contemporary, post-Gallant/Munro "Canadian Literature." Her use of language is incredible, and she's truly funny. Years later I'm still forcing friends to read the book! Another recent Anansi favourite is Bill Gaston's Gargoyles.
