Anansi: It's been a busy fall season for heavy-hitter books. Heading into the holidays, what will be your guilty reading pleasures?
Carey Toane: I'm up for a little David Sedaris I think. He reminds me of a friend of mine who lives far away. Probably The Gargoyle. Homegrown. Maybe the new Miriam Toews? I don't feel guilty about any of these really; they're fun and entertaining. I'm going to be on lots of planes and trains over the holidays so I'd better bring a few options.
Anansi: The IV Lounge's admirable ten-year run recently came to an end. You've stepped up to revive the series as Pivot Readings at the Press Club. How do you see your role as curator, and what can the literary community look forward to in the coming months?
Carey Toane: I was overwhelmed by the positive response and support I received since the new series was announced. It kind of has a life of its own already. When it launches, people can expect the same IV Lounge format they knew and loved: three readers a night, and a mix of poetry and fiction from emerging and established writers. There are very talented and exciting people in store! As for me, I just love reading and going to readings, so I come from that audience member perspective. I hope I can bring a sense of discovery and enthusiasm, and make everyone feel as comfortable as possible while maintaining all the good things that the IV Lounge brought to the community.
Anansi: Do you have a favourite Anansi book, author, or passage?
Carey Toane: I was enraptured for weeks after finishing Gil Adamson's The Outlander. Her protagonist is like “Tess” in the Wild West. I caught myself running from the law on my bike home from work. And Dennis Lee's yesno knocked my socks off.
Anansi: Where can we find you on the Digital Highway?
Carey Toane: Check out http://pivotreadings.wordpress.com for upcoming events, news, and other information about the series.
